Foundation routine for beginners - Clinique Beyond Perfecting foundation

January 25, 2017 Melissa Chee

Check out my foundation routine for beginners using Clinique Beyond Perfecting foundation above. Clinique's Beyond Perfecting is one of my favorite foundations. I love that it's super full coverage--you don't need to use a concealer with it unless you want to. Also, it doesn't break out my sensitive skin (an issue I've had with other full coverage foundations.) The foundation does oxidize a little on my skin, but it's not overly bothersome.

Winter Skincare and Makeup Tips on Afternoon Live

I was back for the second time on Afternoon Live, a local TV show here in Portland, Oregon. This segment was on some winter skincare tips and an easy minimalist makeup look. To view my segment, click here! I'm so happy I was able to do another fun segment on Afternoon Live on KATU.

Winter Skin Care - add some hydration

  1. For a lot of people, cold winter days can also bring dryness to your skin. When you turn the heat on indoors, your skin starts to dry out. This why it is so important to moisturize your face!
  2. You need to moisturize your face all year long, but as the weather changes so will your skin and you need to adjust your skin care routine also. A lighter moisturizer might work well for you during the summer, but in the winter you might need to switch it up for something more heavy duty. Listen to you skin - it will tell you what it needs, you just need to pay attention.
  3. Cleanse your face morning and night and apply your moisturizer after. If you’re feeling super dry, you can apply a slightly heavier night cream after cleansing at night. When you wake up, you face will feel more hydrated.
  4. It doesn’t matter how much makeup you layer on your face if your skin isn’t a good base. Taking care of your skin is so important. Using enough moisturizer improves texture and allows your foundation to apply more evenly. You can even add a hydrating mask to the mix for fun!

We also did a demo on an easy minimalist makeup look with my gorgeous friend Yun Chang as the model. For a full video tutorial on a minimalist makeup look, click here. Or for a pink minimalist makeup look go here.

Get your party dress on for New Year's Eve

1) CITY CHIC 2) ADRIANNA PAPELL 3) LAUREN RALPH LAUREN 4) ALEX EVENINGS

New Year's eve is quickly approaching! Now is the time to start thinking about your New Year's eve dress, if you don't already have a sparkly number picked out and hanging in your closet.

Tips for picking the perfect New Year's eve dress

  • Consider location - will you be hanging out at a house party, attending a gala or going clubbing? Certain styles might make more sense depending on your plans. However on New Year's eve, you can always be dressier than the location dictates. If you like sequins, wear them... even if you're just headed to a local dive bar.
  • Decide on a budget - is this a dress you will wear over and over again? If so, you can afford to spend a little more, which does translate into quality and fit. If you purchase a classic little black dress like the Lauren Ralph Lauren dress #3 above, you can shell out a little more cash with the assurance you can wear the dress to multiple functions for years. But if you're looking for a sparkly number that you might only wear once, definitely check out a less expensive brand like Forever 21. Charlotte Russe also has plus size dresses at bargain prices.
  • Ignore trends - It's fun to be stylish and on-trend, but the point I'm trying to make is that it's more important for the dress to look good on you! Different styles flatter different body types. If the it-dress of the moment doesn't flatter your curves, keep looking. Don't be afraid to try on a dress that looks ugly on the hanger, you would be surprised how often I've LOVED something I tried on that initially I didn't even like.

What to pack in your purse

Don't forget these essentials for New Year's eve

  1. Mints or gum - every gal needs fresh breath on New Year's eve
  2. Lipstick or gloss - touch ups will be necessary
  3. Cash - cab fare or something unexpected, it's just a good idea
  4. ID and credit card - obvious, but necessary
  5. Foldable flats - if you're wearing high heels
  6. Hand sanitizer - stay germ free
  7. Tylenol - in case you get a headache
  8. Kleenex - they just come in handy
  9. Ear plugs - stash a pair just in case
  10. Smartphone - doubles as your camera too

Wishing you a happy and safe New Year's eve! What is your favorite New Year's eve outfit? I once wore a super bad ass waist cinching belt, all black everything with a cami with silver sparkle stripes on black. I felt like a rockstar. New Year's eve itself was so-so, but my outfit was amazing.
